1. Piazza San Marco and Basilica
Saint Mark Area is the very center of Venice history and power. From here, you can feel and understand the greatness of a city that has been a leading trade power back in the past.
In this area, you can’t miss a visit to the Basilica or to the bell tower. Try to avoid the expensive bar in the square in favour of a cheaper Bacaro in the streets nearby. Find out more here.
Moving from Piazza San Marco towards the Canal Grande you will see, on your left, Palazzo Ducale. Palazzo Ducale has been for centuries the political center of the Republic of Venice and, nowadays, it is a wonderful museum full of charm and history. Festa del Redentore
An old, but spectacular Venetian tradition: Festa del Redentore is a big event taking place every year on the third Sunday of July.
It reminds the Venetian Senate decision to build the Chiesa del Redentore (Redeemer’s Church) as an ex-vote for the liberation of the city from the black death of 1575-1577, a plague that caused the death of more than a third of the city’s population in just two years.
